Cynthia is the founding director of Island Health Inc., serving as its Executive Director since 2002, and appointed in 2015 by the Board of Directors as Chief Executive Officer. Her background in public service and management includes over 27 years as an elected official in the Town of West Tisbury where she is currently in her 19th year as a member of the Board of Selectmen. She served as that town’s full-time elected Treasurer from 1986-2003. Cynthia became interested in health care and community health planning through her membership on the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital’s Board of Directors from 1990–1996. She served as that Board’s chair, and went on to chair the Dukes County Health Council from 1998-2002, and again from 2004-2008. She founded Island Health Care, Massachusetts’ first Rural Health Clinic, in 2004 and led the organization to its present designation as a Federally-Qualified Community Health Center.
Kathleen Beriau, CPA, MHA, CFO
Kathleen Beriau, of East Falmouth, joined Island Health Care as CFO in February of 2016. She most recently served as the CFO for Duffy Health Center in Hyannis. Prior to her work at Duffy, Kathleen served as the Director of Finance at Speare Memorial Hospital in New Hampshire and Controller/VP of Finance at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital of Cape Cod. She also worked for the national March of Dimes after beginning her career as a CPA for a large regional accounting firm. She received a Masters in Health Administration from Suffolk University, a BA from Worcester State College, and is a Fellow in the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Kathleen Samways, DPT PT, Director QI/Enabling Services
Kathleen is a long-time ally and advocate for health promotion and inclusion. She is a graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor of Science in physical therapy, earned a Master of Arts with specialization in Adult Education from the University of Rhode Island and became a Doctor of Physical Therapy at Simmons College in Boston. Kathleen was the Clinical Director of the Vineyard Nursing Association, is a member of the Dukes County Health Council and the Healthy Aging Task Force. Her activities in that capacity included qualification as a facilitator for the evidence-based programs of Matter of Balance and Powerful Tools for Caregivers. She has been the Associate Dukes County Commissioner for Disability Affairs since April 2013 and is trained in the Community Access Monitoring process from the Massachusetts Office on Disability. Kathleen joined Island Health Care in October of 2015. She lives in Edgartown with her husband John.
Matthew Stackpole, President, Board of Directors
Matthew, a native of Nantucket island, is a long-time resident of West Tisbury on the Vineyard, where he and his wife Martha raised their family. Matthew has served as the Director of Development and Public Relations for the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital (MVH), president of the MVH Foundation, and has also held senior positions at the Polly Hill Arboretum and the Martha’s Vineyard Museum. From 2008 to 2014, he served as Ship’s Historian and Major Gifts Officer for the Charles W. Morgan restoration project in Mystic, CT, where he grew up on the grounds of Mystic Seaport when his father was Curator. Matthew joined the IHC Board of Directors—of which consumers (health center patients) comprise the majority of members under federal health center requirements—in January 2015, providing enthusiastic and committed leadership to our new Federally-Qualified Community Health Center.
